Home > Tia says.. > Should dogs wear clothes? >
Mum and I were walking in the park today all warm and snug showing off my new Christmas pressy to everyone. Thank you Santa for my security hoodie!
A very rude lady stormed over and demanded that I shouldn't be being dressed up "like a doll" as she put it. Well, mum was very surprised and tried to explain that because of my short fur and lack of under coat many vets actually recommend that in the winter I should have something to keep the cold off such as a hoodie or coat. I don't think she really understood because she pointed to her long haired Collie exclaiming that she would never put him in dog clothes. I'm not surprised, he's got his own thick coat and looked incredibly warm already! Still, he could have done with a shower and a new collar and ID tag, I bet he could have looked quite handsome...
Mum said thank you for your concern but I really do need something warm this time of year. We quickly wondered off, still wagging my tail all the way, pleased as punch I have my warm winter clothes. Mum says that because my dog coat isn't old fashioned and boring people don't like it. They wouldn't mind if it was a wrap over gingham monstrosity (I would!) I don't understand though, don't they want me to stay warm and look pretty if I can?

Does my dog need clothes?
Dogs are no different to people when it comes to cold weather, they feel uncomfortable when the temprature drops. Many vets will suggest extra protection for your dog if walking in very low tempratures.
If your dog is small, very young, very old or has short fur and you live in a cold climate it may be advisable to invest in a hoodie, coat or scarf to keep them warm during the winter. Small and toy breeds such as Chihuahuas, Dachhunds and Toy Poodles are very vulnerable to cold weather. Dogs with very short coats include Boxers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Greyhounds and Weimaraners. These breeds are especially susceptible to cold in windy weather.
All dogs will feel the benefit of a shower proof coat, no matter what sort of fur they have for those grey drizzly days. Every dog should be considered on his/her own merits but in many cases clothing can make your dog more comfortable.
What should I consider when buying dog clothes?
The two most important things to consider when buying dog clothes are comfort and safety. Clothing should not restrict the movement of your dog in any way, it should not be too tight nor should it be so loose it is liable to snag on something. Please see our measuring guide for help with this.
Clothing that helps you, and others to see your dog better in the dark is also something you should consider. A dog coat with a reflective strip, or even a pink hoodie will help you to see your pet in the dark.
