How to Choose the Correct Size for your DogA word about manufacturers' sizes Unlike in the human world, in the dog world there is no universal sizing - each manufacturer describes their product differently. Generally speaking the measurements given are the measurement of the product (and not the size of the dog it will fit! ). Collar Size Most collars are adjustable and the measurements given will be the length the collar can be adjusted from and to. You will need a collar size larger than your dog's neck as it shouldn't be tight fitting but should allow 2 fingers to fit in comfortably. So, for example, if your dog measures 10 inches around the neck choose a collar which will go to larger than 10 inches. Clothes Size Most manufacturers provide the actual measurement of the garment. This is different from human sizes where the garment states the size to fit. So, for example, a man with a 42 inch chest would buy a 42 inch shirt and it will fit. But in the dog world a 12 inch garment will be too tight for a 12 inch chested dog - you would need to choose the size larger to allow room for comfort ********************************** Rule of Thumb Measure your dog and choose the next size up to allow room for comfort unless it specifies 'to fit' a certain size of dog. |
